Which Board to Choose?
Even tought you are a beginner, I'm sure you wish to ride your board as long as possible and the choice you make is very important! You won't stay a beginner long! 2 days practice and you are done;) however you will likely keep your board for 2-3 years before moving on to the next level deck.
As a beginner you will particularly appreciate a Cheap board which does not require you any effort!
Including:
- Price: don't buy expensive, you will not even realize how performant your board is!
- Easy to manage, pardon all bad moves: I do not warranty you won't fall but...
- Maintenance: you want something easy to repair and which does not lead you to emptying your wallet.
Who are you?
This is an essential question which will lead you to the best fit:
Are you a skateboarder, a surfer an alpin skieer, do you like trampoline...
If you are an energy ball and like moving all the time or a skateboarder, chances are that you will end up freestyler. Basically you will enjoy riding the park, make some tricks and even try the rails and hit the pipe.
If you were a skier, a big wave surfer, you might be an amateur of large curves and you will likely enjoy the powder and carving on the edges: you are a freerider!
As a novice, you don't need to go far in details but stay with the following terms: freestyle, freeride or a combination of both.
If you do not know yet then go for an all mountain board (a mix of the two styles).
The price
For the price, that will range from $150 to $350 for the board. Don't look at any which are above this fork of prices, that will be a waste.
You can also go for a second hand deck or a new one on Ebay (some great snowboards to bid on sometimes!):

But I would highly recommend to shop your deck on The-House, they feature great professional offers with free bonus such as sunglasses at a value of $80 and free fast shipping!
Once you are inside The House or ProboardShop, make sure you pick up the best deal by looking at the following mark:
It indicates that the deck has passed intensive tests by pro riders based on many keys and among many boards. It's a quality testimony.

The type of Board
Generally you will go for an All-mountain-freestyle board (all-around freestyle) as this is the most manageable board that will fit on all tracks.
At first you need flex and confort so you can enjoy while progressing on turns and transitions.
Besides flex the sidecut (The sidecut depth is measured as the distance between the waist of the board and an imaginary straight line that strikes both of the contact points at the tip and tail - The sidecut radius is the radial measurement of the curve that matches the inner curvature of snowboard) of the board will be deeper as it's easier to turn with.
The material used among different brands and types of board makes the price. Usually cheap boards are heavier and have less response which yield the deck to be more forgivable so a good choice for the beginner.
Your body & feet!
Do you have big feet over 11 (US size)?
If so then opt for a wider board, otherwise your feet or position will not be confortable on turns and you will tend to wash out!
A wider board has a waist over 26cm and the board is categorized as Mid-Wide or Wide.
If you are heavy, you better take a longer and stiffier board as a compensation. Freeride equipements are stiffier.
Recommended Width Based on Boot Size
| Mens Boot Size | Womens Boot Size | Youth Boot Size | Board Width (at base) |
| Up to 5.5 | Up to 6 | Up to 6 | Up to 24 cm Narrow |
| 6 to 10 | 6.5 to 11 | 24-25.5 cm Regular | |
| 10 to 12 | 25.5-26.5 cm Midwide | ||
| 12 or larger | 26.5 cm+ Wide |
Here is a Height Chart for a snow board: Simply select your height and click the button.
From the result, if you are a bit heavy then opt for the highest number from the fork. The weight is very important for selecting the right board. Height gives the fork, weight picks up the right size. Women usually take the smallest number.
Now you have the most important key elements to help you choose a deck; the price is a very good criteria and here is the last tip about maintenance and the technology behind:
As a beginner you do not need a fast and expensive snowboard base which is even more expensive once you need to fix it. There are 2 types of bases: Extruded & Sintered; they both have numbers next to them which conduct the degree of absorption of the wax. The higher the number, the more wax can be absorbed and thus the more glide you will obtain.
In two words: go extruded as it's cheap and easy to maintain.
Also you do not need a board featuring Carbon and high technology material combined inside the core.
Following are a few boards suitable for beginners to advanced snowboarders. You can also browse The House using the above tips by yourself.
Women boards are also flexier as they are generally smaller and lighter. They also get a nice design.
The Boots (Very important)
Once you've got the right deck the choice of the boots is essential (don't buy hard boots for a freestyle deck!).Even though boots are cheaper online, you should try them before you buy, you have your own feet and they might not fit even the most expensive paire of shoes!
Make sure they fit you confortably with No Heel lift and Pressure Points. Once you are sure about your boots, you can write down the brand name and type then go to your online shop;)
The Bindings
Any mid range bindings will do with your new or old boots.
From your body to the board passing by the boots & the bindings the energy is efficiently conducted or not depending on a good combination of Boots/Bindings.
As a beginner or intermediate snowboarder you will likely find that Soft Boots will suit you admirably.
However if you are used to ski and or are looking for Alpin style snowboarding, you better take High Backs or hard boots (note to beginners: take a mix with high backs and soft boots).
One solution
Apart from these snowboards, as a beginner you may find packages very interesting as you can have bindings, boots and board as the same time and get some discount.
